Praise as Authority: Enter the Gates with Thanksgiving

March 4, 2026

Today I want to speak plainly again: you have been given a simple, powerful instruction—enter the gates of God with thanksgiving and come into His courts with praise on your lips. This is not a metaphor to admire from the outside. This is a command to act. When you learn to do it, everything changes—your strength, your authority, and the way heaven moves on your behalf.

The First Step: Praise Is a Verb

Psalm 148 begins with a call: “Praise the Lord. Let the skies be filled with praise.” Notice the grammar. Praise is a verb. It expects movement from you. When you read Scripture, don’t speed-read to finish. Slow it down. Digest it. Let the words become instructions rather than background history.

Here’s the practical bottom line: thanksgiving opens the gate. Praise carries you into the court. Once you’re in the court—authentic, audible, heartfelt praise—righteous judgment and authority begin to attach to your life.

How to Practically Enter the Gate

  • Speak gratitude audibly—even softly. Your voice emits a frequency that affects the atmosphere.
  • Make praise a habit: in the car, doing chores, waking up, seeing a mountain or a sunrise—say thank you out loud.
  • Choose praise over peeking. Don’t be a peeping Tom at the gate. Come in. The difference between observing and experiencing is everything.

Gratitude Breaks Strongholds

There’s a short, powerful progression I want you to remember: Sin kills Jesus. Love kills lust. Faith kills fear. Gratitude kills anger. Purpose kills laziness. Focus kills distraction. Now read it backwards and you have a spiritual strategy. Gratitude is not just a spiritual nicety—it dismantles hardness, unforgiveness, and bitterness. That’s the atmosphere you need to walk in to access authority.

Praise Triggers the Heavenly Chorus

When you praise, you are not alone. Psalm 148 envisions a cosmic chorus—sun, moon, stars, angels, mountains, trees, beasts, birds, kings, children—all joining in. Your praise down here triggers a response up there. It’s like a concert building to a crescendo: starts small, then the heavens take it higher. The throne room responds to sincere praise and thanksgiving.

Practical images to remember

  • Praise is contagious—ruminate on it until it becomes who you are.
  • Make your praise honest and physical—voice, breath, movement—so it becomes an offering that changes atmosphere.
  • The angels are given charge over us; our choices provoke their obedience. Choose praise and the hosts of heaven answer.

Authority: Decreeing What Heaven Already Secured

Scripture repeatedly says you can decree a thing and it will be established. That’s not idle poetic language. You have been seated with Christ in heavenly places. When you enter the gate with thanksgiving and stand in the court with praise, you begin to receive fresh strength and authority.

Authority is not a badge you wear because someone gave it to you. It grows out of experiential time in God’s presence. It is formed by habit: thanksgiving, praise, obedience, Scripture read as instruction.

Concrete steps to walk in that authority

  1. Read the Bible as your owner’s manual—look for instructions, not just chronology.
  2. Practice audible praise daily. Frequency matters more than volume.
  3. Make declarations that align with Scripture and repent quickly of careless words.

Armor On: How Praise Connects with Spiritual Weapons

When you practice this life of praise and thanksgiving, you’re not only elevated emotionally—you’re clothed. Scripture describes the full armor of God: helmet of salvation, breastplate of righteousness, belt of truth, shoes of peace, and the sword of the Spirit. These are not abstract; they are lived realities that begin to function when you enter the court.

Examples you can use right now:

  • Helmet of salvation—guard your mind; take every thought captive and line it up with Scripture.
  • Belt of truth—wrap yourself in God’s Word so your identity and speech don’t betray you.
  • Shoes of Shalom—declare peace as you go; the promise is that the earth given to you will be affected by your presence.
  • Sword of the Spirit—speak the Word. It cuts and accomplishes what it is sent to do.

Purim, Esther and Present-Day Application

The Purim story—Esther, Mordecai, Haman—teaches us that God’s patterns repeat. A decree sealed by a king cannot be easily reversed; yet when the people of God act in faith and step into the court, reversal and deliverance come. Mordecai (a Jew) rose from enemy to prime minister (in Iran). That narrative is showing us that what was can be again—God’s deliverance repeats itself across generations.

We are not spectators in this. Spiritual realities and kingdom decrees ripple into nations. When praise is offered and righteousness advances, oppressive systems unravel. The call is the same: take your place, enter the gate with thanksgiving, and speak the decrees of heaven boldly.

Daily Discipline: Practical Habits That Produce Authority

  • Create short pockets of praise—before the day starts, in the car, at chores. Make them audible.
  • Catch wrong words quickly. Repent and replace them with decrees aligned to God’s promises.
  • Read Scripture slowly and ask: what is the instruction here? Where is God inviting me to act?
  • Gather corporately when you can. Corporate praise compounds individual authority.

Short rituals to begin with

  1. Stand and thank God out loud for three things in view.
  2. Declare one scriptural promise over your day.
  3. Walk a line of territory—your street, workplace, or city—and release a short prayer of peace.

Closing Charge

Do not let this be a momentary uplift. Make thanksgiving and praise a permanent atmosphere in your life. When your lips are shaped by gratitude, the courts of heaven open and authority flows. You were created in God’s image to exercise dominion—not through selfish aggression but through obedient worship, faithful reading of the Word, and vocal decrees that align with heaven.

Choose today to stop peering from the gate. Come in. Enter the court. Praise until the heavens thunder and watch the victory already secured on the cross begin to move in your life, your family, and your nation.

For those who pray for nations and families: do not underestimate the spiritual power of a people who will rise together in audible thanksgiving. Put on your armor. Speak with boldness. The Lord provides strength and favor to those who choose to enter His presence with a grateful heart.

May this be woven into your spirit—permanently. From this day on, let praise define your steps.

Blessings, Howard Olsen
