Bless the Lord, Oh My Soul: How to Hear God Directly and Still Your Mind & Quiet the Chaos

Friends, I want to speak to you plainly this morning. You were made in the image and likeness of a three-part God—body, soul, and spirit—and God wants to speak to you directly. Not through a YouTube clip, not filtered through a personality, but straight into your spirit. If you feel disconnected or distracted, this message is for you.

The problem: secondhand hearing and a noisy soul

We live in a season where many of us have trained ourselves to listen to others telling us what God said instead of going to the Source. It’s easy to let a pastor, prophet, or influencer do our spiritual listening for us. That creates a habit: whenever a question arises, we click, we play, we consume. The issue is the habit grows stronger with repetition.

You may say, "I never hear from God." I will tell you straight: you do hear from God when you learn to pay the bill—spend time with Him. Holy Spirit is your instant-on connection to the throne room. If you don’t hang out at the throne, you’ll default to secondhand news and your soul will be driven by other people’s interpretations.

Understand who you are: three-part being, three-part God

This matters because it changes how you pray and how you receive. You are body, soul, and spirit. God is Father (soul: mind, will, emotions), Son (body), and Holy Spirit (spirit). When Jesus taught the Lord’s Prayer, He said, "Pray like this: Our Father..." — He was pointing to the soul of God and inviting the soul of humanity to align with it.

In practical terms: your spirit connects you to God, your soul thinks and feels and decides, and your body acts. If your spirit is ignored, the soul runs wild. If the soul is noisy, revelation from Spirit gets drowned out. That’s why David cried out, "Bless the Lord, O my soul"—he was bringing his soul under the authority of his spirit so the mind, will, and emotions would obey and receive.

What hearing from God actually feels like

Most people expect thunderous audible voices. That’s rare. God usually speaks as a pressing idea in your spirit, a thought that won’t leave, a gentle conviction. You will feel a persistence that wasn’t there before. Learn to recognize that persistence as Holy Spirit initiating the conversation.

The process looks like this:

  • Spirit prompts—a thought, a poke, a peace.
  • Soul processes—mind, will, emotions interpret and choose.
  • Body acts—you do what the Lord instructs.

How to quiet the storm—practical exercise

This is not mystical. It is a spiritual discipline that yields access to the throne room. When your mind is racing, anxiety or distraction fills your time, or YouTube prophets have you tossed like a wave, do this exercise.

Find a minute of silence. You don’t need a dramatic time—60 seconds of focused spiritual discipline will demonstrate the principle. Speak to your soul from your spirit. Use your voice if you can. Repeat the lines below slowly and intentionally.

Hey soul, quiet down. Hey mind, be still. Hey will, be still. Hey emotions, be still. You must obey the Holy Spirit. I speak to the storm in my mind; I speak to the storm in my will; I speak to the storm in my emotions. Be still now.

Sit in that silence - Really get grounded and still - give it 60 seconds or more. Receive the peace. Then say, "Holy Spirit, take me to the Father." Now pick up Scripture slowly—low and slow, like a smoked brisket. Read a verse and meditate. Let the thought that won't leave be your confirmation.

Why this matters for the days ahead

We are moving into uncharted moments where God is doing new things. New things don’t always look like old templates. Corporate words will come through prophets and leaders, and those are valuable. But within corporate instruction there will be personal directions—things God wants to say to your heart alone. You will not get those by default from other people.

The fiercer the storm, the more you must dig into Source. The more dependent you are on others for your hearing, the more tossed you will be when voices conflict. The cure is simple and practical: quiet your soul, sit with the Word, invite Holy Spirit to guide your mind, and obey the small, persistent promptings.

Questions to help you practice consistently

  1. Can I set aside five minutes daily to quiet my soul and read one verse slowly?
  2. When a persistent thought appears, will I ask Holy Spirit, "Is this from You?"
  3. Am I using teachings and prophets as confirmation and encouragement, not substitution?

If you answer yes to these, you’re on the right path. If not, start with the 60-second exercise and build. Habits compound. The habit of listening to the Source strengthens your spiritual hearing. The habit of leaning on secondhand words weakens it.

Some straight talk about gossip and influence

God is cleaning house. That does not give anyone a license to spread gossip or stir division. If you are forwarding accusations without being directly affected, stop. Ask Holy Spirit whether you are part of the solution or part of the problem. Kingdom influence builds; slander breaks. Be careful with your mouth and your share button.

Final encouragement

David’s cry—"Bless the Lord, O my soul"—is your daily reset. It pulls your soul into alignment with your spirit and opens a direct line to Father, who wants to give you mind, will, and emotions that reflect His. You were made to hear. Start practicing. Quiet the storm. Read the Word slow. Ask Holy Spirit to take you to the Father. He will speak.
